How Straight Teeth Improves Your Oral Health

Posted on 2/20/2017 by Downtown Dental Care Office
A woman suffering from TMJ, because of her crooked teeth!
When your teeth aren't straight, your confidence is probably not what it should be. After all, your smile is often the first thing that people notice. What would they think of you if you flashed a grin with less than perfect teeth?

But your confidence isn't the only thing that takes a hit with crooked teeth. They can also negatively impact your oral health. Having them straightened, however, can greatly improve it.

Easy to Clean
Keeping your teeth clean with a regular oral hygiene regimen is essential to oral health. But with crooked teeth, properly brushing and flossing is difficult, even if you are diligent.

Food can get caught in hard to reach spaces, and bacteria can hide away from bristles and floss, making you more susceptible to cavities. Straighter teeth give food and bacteria less places to hide, and makes brushing and flossing much easier.

Healthier Gums

hen your teeth are crooked, your gums don't fit properly around them. This makes them more prone to issues. Bacteria can more easily fall beneath the gum line and cause inflammation.

This can lead to severe gum disease if not properly taken care of. If your teeth are straight, your gums will fit better around, and therefore help to keep them healthier.

Less Prone to Damage
Misaligned teeth are much more susceptible to damage than straight teeth. They break easier and are more likely to get chipped. They also cause jaw alignment issues, and lead to uneven wear on your teeth.

Misalignment can cause jaw pain, TMJ pain, headaches and even earaches. Straight teeth can solve alignment issues and protect your teeth from uneven wear and your jaw (as well as your whole face) from suffering from uncomfortable pain.

Straight teeth can greatly improve your confidence and your oral health. If you have crooked, misaligned teeth, contact our office about what your options are for fixing them.
