If You Get a Dental Abscess, You Need to Treat It Before It SpreadsYou may have never had a dental abscess, but if you did, you probably won't ever forget it. Caused by an infection in your tooth, it's characterized by pain, swelling, and a disgusting pocket of pus along your gumline.

An infection can form for a number of reasons, including advanced tooth decay and gum disease. However, if you have a dental abscess, it is absolutely vital that you treat it right away to avoid lasting damage to not only your tooth, but to your health.

The Dangers of an Untreated Dental Abscess

Signs of a dental abscess include pain and swelling in your mouth, a pocket of pus (that resembles a pimple) at the site of the infection, a sour taste in your mouth, bad breath, and pain when chewing. You may also have swollen lymph nodes, a fever, and temperature sensitivity.

While you can prevent a dental abscess from forming by following a good oral health regimen, including routine dental appointments and brushing and flossing, if you do develop one it's critical that you give us a call right away.

Complications that can arise from an untreated dental abscess include:

•  Loss of the tooth: If you do not get prompt treatment for your abscess, it can cause permanent damage to your tooth. We may be able to perform a root canal to save it, but your tooth may also become damaged beyond repair, leading to an extraction.
•  Systemic Infection: An abscess does not just affect the tooth it can harm your entire body. If the infection is allowed to spread, it can become septic. It could quickly spread to other parts of your body, including your heart, lungs, and even your brain.
•  Death: Did your jaw drop from surprise when you read that? The dangers of an abscess are very real, and once it spreads, your risk of complications rise. Patients have died from an untreated abscess, making quick diagnosis and treatment literally a life or death situation.

If you suspect that you have an abscess, call us today. The longer you wait, the higher your chances of permanent problems from it. Give us a call today to schedule your exam and treatment for this potentially deadly issue before it gets worse.
