Sedation Dentistry
Portland, OR

Sedation dentistry at Downtown Dental Care in Portland, OR.Taking care of your mouth is important. You might brush and floss, but attending regular visits to the office (at least twice a year) is important. It's also crucial to visit the office in the event of a dental emergency - such as oral pain or trauma from an injury - as some symptoms are signs of serious issues that need to be addressed immediately. If you have a fear of the dentist, that fear can keep you away, whether it's for a general cleaning and exam or something more serious, like an infection. At Downtown Dental Care, we understand your fears, but we also want to stress the importance of dental care. To help ease your fears, we can provide you with dental sedation, which will make your visits much more manageable.

Why Consider Sedation?

What is Sedation?

Sedation involves using techniques to make you more comfortable during a dental procedure, whether it be a simple exam and cleaning or something more serious like dental surgery. There are different levels of sedation that can be used based on your individual needs:
•  Minimal sedation. This type involves the least amount of sedation and keeps you awake, but relaxed.
•  Moderate sedation. Again, you are still awake with this type of sedation, but you are more out of it, and most likely won't remember the procedure.
•  Deep sedation. With this type of sedation, you are still awake, but just barely.
•  General anesthesia. This sedation is the strongest type, and renders you completely unconscious.

Types of Sedation

Not only are there different levels of sedation, there are also different types. The type used depends upon you as well as the procedure being performed:
•  Nitrous oxide, or "laughing gas" is an inhaled sedative. The effects of this sedative wear off pretty quickly following the end of your procedure.
•  Oral sedatives, which are to be taken a certain amount of time before your procedure to relax you.
•  Intravenous sedatives are delivered directly into your bloodstream, and work rather quickly. Our certified registered nurse anesthesiologist, Matthew, can monitor and adjust the sedation as necessary.

Why Consider Sedation?

Sedation greatly eases your anxiety and fears about being in our office and having procedures done. There are many other reasons to consider sedation as well:
•  You have a low pain threshold or extremely sensitive teeth.
•  You have trouble sitting still.
•  You're gag reflex is bad.
•  You require a substantial amount of dental work.

If you have children who are scared of the dentist, or have difficulty sitting still, sedation is an option for them as well.

Does Sedation Have Side Effects?

Sedation does have the potential for side effects. For one, you may suffer from amnesia, unable to remember the procedure. This may not be a problem for you if you were dreading it, and may actually be seen as a benefit instead. Dental sedation will most likely leave you feeling groggy and a bit out of it afterward. For this reason, it is important to come to your appointment with a family member or friend who can drive you home, as you should not be operating a motor vehicle. Having someone with can also be a great help with moral support!

Sedation dentistry can greatly ease your anxiety, which will allow us to optimize your oral health. Give us a call today at (503) 420-7600 to learn more!
