Dental Hygiene

A smiling woman brushing her teeth in Portland, OregonMaintaining proper dental hygiene is one of the most important things you can do for your smile. Healthy teeth not only make you look and feel good, but they also make it possible to eat and speak without issue. At Downtown Dental Care, we are dedicated to helping you maintain excellent dental hygiene.

What is Good Oral Hygiene?

Daily preventive care can help stop oral health issues before they develop into much more painful, alarming, and costly conditions. During your appointment, Dr. Christianson can teach you proper techniques, and identify areas that may require special attention.

Good oral hygiene will result in a fresh breath, teeth that are clean and free of debris, and gums that are pink and healthy. In between your regular visits, Dr. Christianson suggests you:

•  Brush thoroughly at least twice a day
•  Floss your teeth daily
•  Use oral health care products that contain fluoride
•  Use an antibacterial mouthwash, if necessary
•  Eat a balanced diet, and be mindful of snacks that are high in sugar

These basic principles will decrease your risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral problems. If you experience pain or bleeding while brushing or flossing, be sure to schedule a visit as soon as possible. Untreated decay and gum disease could lead to severe damage and tooth loss.

Dental Exams and Cleanings

Unfortunately, daily preventative care may not be enough to keep your mouth healthy. To maintain optimal oral health, the American Dental Association (ADA) suggests you schedule dental visits at regular intervals. In general, most patients only need to visit our office twice a year. Most visits consist of a dental exam and professional cleaning. During your exam, you can expect us to:

•  Evaluate of your overall dental hygiene and health
•  Identify tooth decay, root decay, and gum disease
•  Determine if you need restorative treatment
•  Determine if you need fluoride treatment
•  Take X-rays and perform other diagnostic procedures
•  Check your jaw and bite for any issues
•  Demonstrate proper hygiene techniques

During the examine, be sure to ask questions, and voice any concerns you may have about your oral health. We may also ask you about other health problems or medications that might be affecting your oral health. For example, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and pulmonary disease have all been linked to gum disease. If you have any prosthetic replacements, Dr. Christianson will examine how well they fit and discuss the need for adjustments.

During a professional cleaning, our dental hygienist will remove plaque, tartar, and minor stains from the surfaces of your teeth. If we notice signs of tooth decay or gum disease, we will discuss options for restorative treatment. Having your teeth cleaned professionally offers some benefits. Some of which include:

•  Prevention of gum disease. The bacteria found in plaque can result in inflammation, irritation, and eventually gum disease. Preventing gum disease can also be beneficial for your overall health.
•  A beautiful smile. Having your teeth cleaned will remove minor stains caused by tea, wine, tobacco, and coffee.
•  Eliminate bad breath. Bad breath is usually an indicator of gum disease, lodged food debris, and poor hygiene. Regular cleanings and daily care are the most effective ways to eliminate bad breath.
•  Prevent tooth loss. Gum disease and decay can lead to painful conditions that may require tooth extraction.
